Why Linux Mint is the most user-friendly desktop operating system

I've tried just about every desktop the world has had to offer. Through the years, I've seen the ridiculously complex to the overly simple, the hardly useful to the very useful. Of late, the desktop seems to be trying hard to migrate to touchscreen technology -- without much success. But even with this lack of success (and lack of adoption on the desktop), some of the operating systems -- such as Ubuntu Unity, GNOME 3, and some of Windows 8 -- are still trying to pimp the touchscreen-friendly features. Thing is, those desktops aren't terribly user friendly. GNOME 3 has been called a disaster. I wouldn't go that far, but it does have some hurdles keeping it from true user friendliness.
Then along comes Linux Mint 12, taking the current state of the desktop and scoring a slam dunk in the user-friendly game. That's right... a Linux desktop might have just pulled way out in front by taking the best of both worlds and mashing them together to create something really special. Let me share with you why I believe Linux Mint 12 is the best of the best in desktop goodness.

1: Smart desktop

This is the biggest thing Linux Mint has brought to the table. Mint has taken GNOME 3, sprinkled in a dash or two of GNOME 2, and allowed the end user to flavor to taste. Basically, Mint has a new desktop subsystem that lets you enable/disable features from GNOME 2 onto GNOME 3. This combination results in an incredibly user-friendly desktop. You want your Start menu? You've got it. You want your bottom panel? You've got it. It's all there, ready to help you create the perfect desktop just for you.

2: Package manager

I've stood strong that the Ubuntu Software Center has been the single best package manager out there. Until now. Linux Mint has given the Ubuntu Software Center a bit of a makeover, resulting in a package manager that is at least as good as the Ubuntu Software Center. Not only does Linux Mint ship with the new and improved Software Center, it also retains both Gdebi and Synaptic. So you have three (four, including the command line) means of installing software on your Linux Mint desktop.

3: Advanced settings

This is actually just a repackage of Ubuntu Tweak, which offers some configuration options not found in the standard configuration tools. In Linux Mint, it plays host to a few configurations. One of these is the enabling/disabling of the various extensions that make up the Mint GNOME Shell Extensions (MGSE). You can also change themes, window behavior, and more. This settings tool is separate from the regular "control panel" settings window. I wouldn't mind this being rolled into the regular settings tool to avoid the possibility of confusion, but it's a welcome addition to the desktop.

4: Startup screen

This is just a minor addition the Linux Mint team made, but I think it goes a long way in terms of aiding the user friendliness of the distribution. I've been railing for quite some time that Linux desktops need a startup screen that gives the new user ideas about where to go for more information. Linux Mint does this perfectly. And you can disable this feature once you're done with it.

5: Included applications

When you install Linux Mint 12, you have pretty much everything you need. Unlike many distributions, Mint didn't drop The Gimp (sounds like lyrics from an 80s rap song), and it retains most of the standard hits: LibreOffice (office suite), Firefox (Web browsing), Thunderbird (email), Nautilus (file management), Brasero (disk burning), Pidgin (instant messaging), Banshee (music), VLC (video), and much more. I was happy to see the retention of The Gimp, Banshee, and the addition of VLC.

6: Themes

There are two desktop themes -- along similar lines with Ubuntu -- a light and a dark theme. But in the case of Linux Mint, the included themes are actually quite nice. The Z-light theme is the default and is both professional and personable. I know, that might not make much sense, but think of it this way: Both of the Mint themes are well suited for either a business environment or a personal environment. And unlike the standard GNOME 3 windows, the Linux Mint windows retain the minimize buttons! These themes work and work well.

7: Samba

When you install Ubuntu, the process of sharing out folders is simple but usually requires the additional installation of Samba. If installed from the DVD version of Linux Mint, everything is included for the sharing of folders. So this process is a right-click away from sharing your folders on a Windows network. As simple as it gets.

8: Installation

The installation routine is borrowed from Ubuntu. It's easy. Its' incredibly easy. In fact, you would be hard pressed to find an easier installation for an operating system. Now I will say, if you're installing from the DVD, the process isn't quite as fast as the Ubuntu distribution. That should be understandable, considering more applications are installed by default.

9: Domain blocker

This is a nice little addition to any Linux desktop. This tool (Mint Nanny) offers a simple means of blocking various domains from being seen from the desktop. Effectively, Linux Mint comes complete with parental controls built -in. And this tool is simple to use. Fire it up, add the domains, watch 'em get blocked.

10: Mate

This is an amazing addition. If your hardware can't power GNOME 3, fear not. You can run Classic GNOME, thanks to Mate. Mate is a fork of GNOME 2 and is basically the 2D mode for GNOME. The Mate desktop includes a bottom panel, start button, system tray, and desktop launchers. Of course, you don't need to have less-powered hardware to enjoy a pseudo-GNOME 2 desktop. From the login screen, choose Mate and you're good to go.

10-Fantastic Features of Red Hat 6.5

The latest iteration of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) operating system has arrived and it is not only ready for the enterprise, it's ready to re-define and reset the bar for enterprise expectations. With a full host of improvements (and new features), RHEL could easily become the de facto standard for enterprise platforms.
If you're not sure of this claim, or simply cannot believe the claim, I offer up to you ten reasons why your enterprise should adopt Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

1. Precision Time Protocol

If your company requires time to be measured in microseconds, you need a platform that works with the Precision Time Protocol (PTP). PTP enables sub-microsecond clock accuracy over a local area network. If you depend upon high-speed, low-latency applications (such as those used in the trading industry), PTP is a must-have.

2. Easy application image deployment

There's a new tool in town (or at least a renamed tool), called Docker. With Docker you can easily deploy application images within containers. Each of these containers run the application as if it were on a virtual machine. This means you no longer have to suffer the overhead of deploying a full-blown virtual operating system just to run a simple application. This will not only make your virtual environment much more efficient, it'll also be far more cost effective.

3. Open hybrid cloud

RHEL 6.5 includes both OpenStack and OpenShift. OpenStack is an open source cloud computing platform and OpenShift automates the provisioning, management, and scaling of cloud computing platforms. Together these two pieces work to create a Platform as a Service (PaaS). This, in conjunction with Docker creates an incredibly flexible cloud environment that can serve the enterprise needs in many ways.

4. Enhanced security

RHEL 6.5 enjoys numerous security upgrades. Key to the enhancements is a centralized certificate trust store which provides standardized certificate access for all security services. There are also tools that support the OpenSCP 2.1 implementation of the Security Content Automation Protocol (SCAP). This protocol was developed by US National Institute of Standards and Technology and is central for auditing and verifying security configurations. With this included standards-based technology, it is possible to ensure a RHEL server configuration meets very stringent standards.

5. Network activity views

If you're an administrator that likes to know specifically what is going on with your network, RHEL 6.5 has what you're looking for. The latest version of Red Hat offers a comprehensive view of all network activity. With these new capabilities, administrators will be able to inspect Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) data in order to list multicast router ports, multicast groups with active subscribers (and their associated interfaces). 

6. Improved virtualization tools

There are plenty of improvements to the virtualization tools included with RHEL 6.5. High on this list is the ability to dynamically enable or disable virtual processors in active guests. With this new addition, RHEL can now better interact with cloud-based elastic workloads. Virtual guest memory has also been improved, with configurations that support up to 4TB of memory on the Linux built-in, kernel-based virtual machine hypervisor.

7. Subscription management

RHEL 6.5 now boasts a revised Subscription Management. With this new tool you have the choice of having your server connect to the Red Hat Customer Portal or to an on-premise subscription management service set up using the Subscription Asset Manager. With the server and the service connected, your company will enjoy centralized control of all subscription assets. Another benefit of this service is that you gain enhanced reporting for multiple systems.

8. Faster dump files

If you've ever had to deal with large kernel dump files, you know they can cause problems. That is no more with RHEL 6.5 The new system is now capable of handling incredibly large dump files faster. Thanks to a new compression algorithm (LZO), dump files are created far faster than previous iterations. Enhancements to the dump tools tracing and testing commands provides additional even monitoring capabilities.

9. Improved storage

Anyone working with RHEL 6.5 will see a marked improvement of storage. One reason for this is the improved control and recover when working in iSCSI or Fiber Channel Storage Area Networks. The latest release also includes a solid state driver (SSD) controller interface as well as support for NVM Express-based SSDs. It is also now possible to configure over 255 (Logical Unit Number) LUNs connected to a single iSCSI target.

10. Improved overall performance

Above everything, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5 enjoys an over all performance increase that is noticeable  – which, in turn, translates to more reliable environments, cost savings, and happier end users/CTOs. This improved performance means your critical applications can be run more effectively – which translates to a better bottom line.

Xbox 720 vs. PS4 vs. PC: How the hardware specs compare


Microsoft has now confirmed the Xbox 720′s specs (aka, the Xbox One). They seem to be exactly the same as the rumored specs. In addition to the specs listed below, Microsoft has confirmed that the Xbox 720 has 8GB of RAM, HDMI in/out, USB 3.0, and a 500GB hard drive. The Xbox 720 (Xbox One) seems to have virtually identical hardware to the PS4.

Download apps from Google Play directly to your PC

Downloading Apps is not only time consuming, but also painfully slow at times when the Internet connection is down or weak. In order to get things in the fast lane, we use an app to back up the apps and save them on the PC. On the other hand, as we all know, most apps keep being updated by their developers and tracking the updates is not possible if we do not have the Google account setup on the Android device. This means doing the same thing all over again and hitting the 'Update App' button every time we have to test a new device. Read full article here

Ubuntu for mobile


Canonical has announced that The open-source Ubuntu operating system is coming to a smartphone near you.
The company is targeting two key audiences with the release - the enterprise market and basic, entry-level smartphones.
"We expect Ubuntu to be popular in the enterprise market, enabling customers to provision a single secure device for all PC, thin client and phone functions," Jane Silber, CEO of Canonical, said in a statement. "Ubuntu is already the most widely used Linux enterprise desktop, with customers in a wide range of sectors focused on security, cost and manageability."
Silber also envisioned the OS for basic smartphone tasks like phone, SMS, Web, and email, "where Ubuntu outperforms thanks to its native core apps and stylish presentation."
"Our mission is to make something extraordinary; something that has never existed before - one platform for all kinds of computing; your phone, tablet, desktop, and TV, and of course, the cloud, and your personal supercomputer," Mark Shuttleworth, Ubuntu founder, said in a video message (below).
Shuttleworth said Canonical has "made sure that we can use Android kernels and Android drivers, so if your hardware works with Android, it will also work with Ubuntu."
The video showed off a UI that accesses apps and other services via swipes from the left and right of the screen. It's the "first phone that uses every edge of the screen, [and] each edge has specific purposes," Shuttleworth said.
Touch the left side of the screen and favorite apps will appear in a row, top to bottom. Swipe from the right side of the screen for easy access to most used apps. Swipe from the top for a search box.
Shuttleworth said Canonical considers HTML5 to be a "first-class development environment." But he acknowledged that HTML5 has its limitations, "so we've built a native app develoment environment for the phone," he said.
"It uses QML to give you a really slick, easy development experience for touch apps that can have their engine written in C or C++ and also use Javascript for some of the UI glue that isn't performance critical," he continued.
The QML tool kit and sample application are available for download today, he said.
Shuttleworth said that top gaming companies are moving to support Ubuntu, so "you can count on having all the best games in the palm of your hand."
Canonical will be at next week's Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas and will show the Ubuntu phone at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month.
The move comes almost a year after Canonical unveiled Ubuntu for Android, which would launch a full desktop OS experience whenever you connected your phone to a computer screen and keyboard.

Windows 8 new features


Windows 8 is revolutionizing the PC industry with an interface that diverges greatly from something we’ve all grown quite accustomed to. For better or worse, Microsoft is forcing its users toward the mobile way of viewing things. While this has given way to much criticism, there are countless benefits that can be seen from this mobile push, interface notwithstanding. Here are several important features of the new Windows 8 operating system.
UEFI Replaces BIOS
For those of you who know what BIOS is, this will be a much-needed change. Microsoft has created a new boot solution called Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI), which will significantly improve the boot process and user experience, replacing the older archaic Basic Input Output System (BIOS) that we’ve been stuck with for decades.
With Windows 8 has come faster boot times of around eight second between pushing the power button and windows opening. This, along with the need for fewer system reboots, will help increase productivity in the office.
UEFI is not only more user-friendly, but comes equipped with several new and handy features. Secure boot prevents unauthorized operating systems from loading, and Early Launch Anti-Malware (ELAM) protects against boot loader attacks. It is also quite IT-friendly and allows administrators to perform remote diagnostics and computer repairs via the network.
Full Windows Experience on Tablets
Most tablets don’t have the processing capacity to run a full PC-based operating system. Windows 8 seeks to change that by allowing x86-based tablets the opportunity to retain much of the productivity allowed by Windows 8. Rather than using an environment that is toned down and more restricted, you can use the full Windows environment. This means you can still use the same Windows applications from Microsoft Office 2013 to countless more desktop-based applications.
This benefit only applies to x86-based tablets that are loaded with Windows 8 Pro. Tablets with ARM processors that run Windows Run Time (RT) will unfortunately only support the Metro-style apps and won’t offer the full Windows experience.
Windows To Go
This is a feature we’ve all been wanting for countless years (some of us anyway). The Windows To Go feature in Windows 8 Enterprise allows users to put a clean install of Windows 8 onto a 32GB or higher USB thumb or portable drive and boot it from other computers. This is especially helpful for individuals who are telecommuters or temporary contractors as you can fit an entire PC operating system loaded with all the needed applications, settings and files onto a device small enough to fit in your pocket.
You can also use this feature to create a backup operating system in the event that your computer becomes infected or corrupted. To protect against theft, you can encrypt your device with BitLocker.
New Recovery Options
We all dread that moment when the “blue screen of death” appears and we’re forced to recover or reinstall Windows. Windows 8 offers two new options, Refresh and Reset, which will help save you countless hours in reconstructing the PC’s environment. You can initiate these options through the Metro-style Settings app within Windows or via the new boot Windows Recovery Environment.
Refresh keeps all of your personal data, apps and settings, but reinstalls Windows. This entire process can take less than 10 minutes regardless of how much personal data needs to be backed up. Reset removes all data on the computer and reinstalls Windows to the same condition it was in the first time it started. This can take between 10 and 25 minutes, a far cry from the several hours that older Windows environments took to install.

How desktop users will use touch Windows 8


Much has been heard on Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system which already has consumer preview version released. What makes the operating system interesting is the fact that it is touch based and it is from this very feature that something confusing builds up from:how will the desktop users experience the feature(touch)? Microsoft seems more than comfortable with the disruption — which is refreshing to see from the company — but it will still need to give desktop users tools with which the new OS can be operated. Originally it seemed like all the touch controls and new conventions would be additive and desktop users could just ignore them if they wanted, but that might not have to be the case. With the $40 Microsoft Touch mouse users without a touch display will be able to swipe, slide, and pinch their way through Windows 8.
Microsoft’s Touch mouse has been available for the better part of a year and touch gestures in Windows are nothing new, but we know that they will play a prominent role in Windows in the future. This mouse, and ones like it, could bring multitouch controls to the desktop-using masses, making them both affordable and accessible. It could be one of the tools that let’s Windows 8′s designers achieve both their user experience and HCI goals.
Of course the mouse will work with laptops, but trackpads will be a lot more convenient and popular option. With laptops outselling desktops these days there is no question that the trackpad will be the primary gesture tool in Windows 8. And the Touch mouse will never be for Microsoft what the Magic Trackpad is for Apple — the canonical device by which Apple’s laptop and mobile device interactions are shifted to the desktop — but it could still play an important part in allowing desktop users to take advantage of the features that Windows 8 offers.
With the mandate that Windows 8 “work[s] like a device, not a computer” it’s clear that Microsoft is banking on products like this one to bridge the gap between different classes of users and different modes of Windows usage. If you think that’s strong language, thecompany also noted that it wants “touch as a first-class input method” and that it’s “embracing” touch on the desktop. How do you do that without a refresh to most of the displays in the world and a some nasty cases of “gorilla arm“? A capacitive, multitouch-capable mouse of course.
The final piece to this puzzle is Microsoft’s announcement in February that the Touch mouse will be updated for Windows 8. Specific changes were not mentioned, but I’ve been told that there will be more gestures and better gesture compatibility once Windows 8 hits GA status. Swipes will be able to handle tasks like summoning Windows 8′s charms and app bar, as well as switching between programs. Nothing you can’t with the keyboard, but with the focus on touch it’s important to give desktop users an option.

Microsoft's strategies to beat Google and Apple

Microsoft is picking itself up again -- and, unlikely as this sounds, it's one Apple and Google should be worried about.
Microsoft's recipe relies on three key ingredients: Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox. The secret sauce, which features a dash of Bing and SkyDrive, is still simmering. But Microsoft is nothing if not patient, and it thinks its trio of core consumer products will blend together in the next few years to form a major new ecosystem.
Here's the big vision: Whether you're using your TV, PC, tablet, phone, or almost any other device that comes along, you'll be able to accomplish all the same tasks through all the same platform. The form factor will change, but the core experience won't.
"People are starting to see the same look-and-feel across the three screens and the cloud," says Craig Beilinson, director of Microsoft's consumer marketing. "This is all going to get pretty blurry."
It's a vision shared by Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) and Google (GOOG, Fortune 500), but their implementations are fundamentally different.
The linchpin of Microsoft's plan is Windows 8, which is set to launch this fall. The new operating system features touchscreen integration and the interactive tile-based "Metro" user interface, which debuted in late 2010 for Windows Phone 7 and made its way to Xbox last summer.
That lets Windows run -- quite well, according to early reviews -- on a host of new devices, including tablets, table tops, large touchscreen displays and convertible notebooks.
Microsoft is also baking cloud-based services like Windows Live, SkyDrive and Bing into all of its consumer products. Sign in on any device and you'll have access to all of your content, apps, preferences and search history.
Apple and Google's device ecosystems are more fragmented.
Apple says we're in a "post-PC" world. Its solution puts mobile devices like the iPad and iPhone at the forefront, envisioning the PC as a wholly separate device and platform. Macs integrate with iOS devices, but there's a clear schism in Apple's world view: Mobile devices are for content consumption, Macs are for creation.
For example, it's hard to build iPad apps on an actual iPad. To run Apple's Xcode developer software, you need a Mac.
Google's model focuses on the Web as the single platform of the future. It's a device-agnostic approach, but it requires constant connectivity. Once you go offline, your connection to Google's computing platform vanishes.
Right now, both are thrashing Microsoft in key markets. Microsoft has watched Apple race past it in media and tablets. Google captured search and the cloud, and both companies overtook Microsoft in smartphones. Meanwhile, sales of the PC -- Microsoft's bread and butter -- have stalled.
That puts Microsoft in an unusual position. It's the underdog.
Microsoft-turned-Google-turned-Microsoft engineer James Whittaker explained that phenomenon in a recent blog post about why he left his job as a head engineer on social network Google+ to return to Redmond.
Facing an existential crisis, Microsoft is making radical changes. Windows and Office "have clearly undergone some sort of genetic re-engineering," he says.
In a lightly veiled swipe at Google, he added: "Most big competitors don't want the disruption. When you make your money on the status quo, you are incented to move slow or not at all."
Microsoft can't afford to move slow. It knows that in five years, the PC won't be what it is today.
Your office desktop will probably still have a monitor, a mouse and a keyboard, but those are just accessories. As mobile devices get better and faster, they're taking over more of our computing tasks. Soon, a smartphone -- or a tablet -- could be your central device. Plug it into your desktop dock in the morning, then take it with you at night, and you'll have have an extremely portable, all-in-one computer.
That's the world for which Microsoft is building Windows 8. It can run everything from a touchscreen app like Angry Birds to resource-intensive software such as 3-D games and video editing tools. That sounds simple, but it's an all-in-one approach Microsoft's rivals have chosen not to pursue.
Microsoft's long game
Windows 8 probably won't be an instant hit. It's a dramatic change, and corporate IT departments -- Windows' biggest customer base -- are slow to shift directions.
That's OK with Microsoft. It's prepared to play the long game, devoting years -- and, often, billions of dollars -- to cracking the markets it considers critical.
That's why it was willing to lose money for so long on Xbox, which recently became the world's leading game system. That's also why it is willing to plow billions each year into Bing, which remains a financial black hole.
"We're a company that has extraordinary patience," says Microsoft's Beilinson.
Patience is great, but execution is critical. Microsoft's mobile track record is littered with some spectacular failures -- like Windows CE, the mobile operating system designed to look and function like Windows on the desktop. Sound familiar?
There's signs Microsoft has finally learned from its previous catastrophes. Its "consumer preview" version of Windows 8 is drawing cautiously optimistic reviews.
Cnet reviewer Seth Rosenblatt calls it "the most ambitious operating system ever," with a "speed and responsiveness" that Windows has never had before. Gizmodo deemed it a "daring" and "brilliant," while The Telegraph says it's Microsoft's "most radical release in a generation."
All the reviewers point out a key question mark hanging over Windows 8: Developer support. The platform will only take off if software makers embrace it as a legitimate third player in the Apple-and-Google field.
That's why Microsoft is throwing everything it has into creating a new ecosystem. It can't afford to be wrong.  To top of page

Red Hat Becomes Open Source’s First Billion dollar Baby

The 17-year-old Raleigh, North Carolina software vendor is set to release its fiscal 2012 earnings numbers on Wednesday, and if things go as planned, it should bump past $1 billion in annual revenue.
That would mark the first time that any open-source company has cracked the $1 billion barrier — something that must have seemed pretty close to impossible back in 1993 when Red Hat’s first CEO, Bob Young, decided to make a go of AAC Corporation, as Red Hat was originally called. At the time, the company was as much a bookseller as a Linux company.
Other companies have made big money selling Linux — Intel, IBM, Dell, and others have used it as a way to sell hardware and support services — but Red Hat has managed the tricky business of building a software platform that big businesses will pay for. Corporate types like Red Hat Linux because it’s certified to run a lot of the business applications that they use. That means that when they call up Oracle or SAP for tech support, they don’t get the run-around.
There are countless open source software projects under development. Few of them are hits, and even fewer are commercial successes, says Walter Pritchard, a financial analyst with Citigroup. “You kind of have to be in the right place at the right time.”
Because Red Hat sells annual subscriptions to its Linux products and then books that revenue gradually over the course of the year, its earnings tend to be pretty predictable. Red Hat was already saying that it would break the $1 billion barrier back in June. But the company declined to comment for this story.

Pritchard expects Red Hat to report $1 billion in annual revenue on Wednesday when it announces earnings after the close of the market. But he’s hard-pressed to think of other open source companies that come even close. So are we.
In fact, despite all of the chatter over the past 10 years about disruptive open source business models, Red Hat’s landmark earnings report is only going to underscore what an exception it really is. It’s closest rival, SuSE Linux, has pegged annual sales at $170 million. When it filed to go public back in 2006, open-source database vendor MySQL’s annual revenues were just $50 million.
To a large extent, Red Hat is cashing in on a much broader community effort that has developed Linux and sold it as a viable platform to software developers, says George Weiss, an analyst with the Gartner technology research firm. But Red had a hand in this. “Give credit to Red Hat for fashioning a business model that created value from subscription support,” he adds.
